Biography

Dr. Matthew Tytherleigh received his training at London’s St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. His surgical training took place at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford under the supervision of Professor Neil Mortenson. He was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons of England Fellowship in 2006. (General Surgery). He conducted his research with Professor Sir Walter Bodmer at Oxford’s Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine. He earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree for his dissertation, “The Antibody Treatment of Colorectal Cancer.” Dr. Matthew completed his Colorectal Fellowship Year at the Concord Hospital in Sydney, Australia, under Professor Les Bokey. He was awarded the Covidien Laparoscopic Colorectal Traveling Fellowship three years later at the same facility. He also received a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship, an Oxfordshire Research Grant, and travel Fellowships to Stockholm, Grenada, and Melbourne. After completing his training, he was appointed as a Locum Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, followed by a substantive appointment at Ipswich Hospital. Dr. Matthew has played a critical role in enhancing guest safety and clinical governance, implementing various initiatives, including an enhanced recovery program. He was awarded a Clinical Excellence Award in 2011 for this work. Dr. Matthew is board certified in colorectal cancer, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, inflammatory bowel disease and colitis, proctology (including hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas), fecal incontinence, prolapse and hernia surgery, advanced colonoscopy. He co-authored the Colorectal Surgery chapter in The New Aird’s Companion to Surgical Studies, the recommended surgical trainee textbook in the United Kingdom. He has published over 20 research articles and presented on over 30 occasions, both nationally and internationally.
